Endodontic Retreatment in Greensboro

With the appropriate care, your teeth that have had endodontic treatment will last as long as other natural teeth. Yet, a tooth that has received treatment may fail to heal or pain may continue to exist. Sometimes, the pain may occur months or years after treatment. If so, Drs. Baird, Stanley, Malueg, Horwitz, Morrow, Mohorn, Schweizer or Grine may need to perform Endodontic Retreatment.

Can A Root Canal Need To Be Redone?

Improper healing may be caused by:

  • Curved or narrow canals were not treated during the initial treatment
  • Complicated canals went undetected during the initial treatment.
  • The crown or restoration was not placed within the appropriate amount of time following the procedure.
  • The crown or restoration did not prevent saliva from contaminating the inside of the tooth.

In some cases, new problems can influence a tooth that was successfully treated:

  • New decay can expose a root canal filling material, causing infection.
  • A cracked or loose restoration can expose the tooth to new infection.

How Is Endodontic Retreatment Done?

Once retreatment has been selected as a solution to your problem, the doctors will reopen your tooth to gain access to the root canal filling material. This restorative material will be removed to enable access to the root canal. The doctors will now clean your canals and carefully examine the inside of the problematic tooth. Once cleaned, the doctors will fill and seal the canals and place a temporary filling in the tooth.

At this point, you will need to return to your dentist as soon as possible in order to have a new crown or restoration placed on the tooth to restore full functionality.

Patient Review by jack Q

I had a severe Root Canal issue that flared up and my Primary Dentist referred me to Dr Stanley for a possible Root Canal. The staff at Piedmont Endodontics was incredible in how they handled the situation. I had an existing Root Canal. that was causing severe discomfort. I was headed on a long overseas trip in just 7 days. Delaying the procedure would be painful. After a discussion with Dr Stanley and looking at all options it was decided to move forward and replace the area with new material. Because it was an emergency Dr Stanley and his team worked thru their lunch period to insure my comfort. The procedure was a success, and my overseas trip went on as scheduled. My thanks to the entire staff for their professional handling of my case. Dr Stanley is a true professional, very knowledgeable, and a tremendous asset to Piedmont Endodontics.

Dr. Horowitz and his staff were so nice during my visit. They calmed my fears and I almost went to sleep while he was working on me. He was very professional and started working on me within 5 min. after I got in the treatment room. If I ever need any more work done regarding root canals, I will definitely go back to him.

From the initial consult thru the actual procedure the entire staff showed compassion and care. Dr. Baird has a very calming presence and was honest about some of the uncertainties with having to have an old root canal re-done. Who knew 17 years later a previous root canal could cause issues??? They explained each step of the procedure and called the next day to check on how I was doing. I hope I don’t have to see them again but I have no hesitation if I do! Highly recommend!

I'm thrilled to have been back to this practice since the early 80's when Dr. Olmsted did my root canals and internal bleaching on my top 6 front teeth (was due to Tetracycline stain). I decided to go back there in March after I'd noticed a sore area at the root of 1 of these teeth and was introduced to Dr. Stanley who talked with me about my options to remedy this issue. Dr. Stanley and each of his assisting staff are very knowledgeable, nice, work well together, attentive, accommodating and calming! Dr. Stanley has such good people skills and knows how to make people feel at ease. The re-treatment of 2 of my root canals as well as the internal bleaching were a success and had no discomfort at any time. Do not hesitate making an appointment with Dr. Stanley for your Endo needs. You'll be well taken care of, rest assured!

I have a total phobia of dental work. Dr. Malueg and her assistant Lisa were the best to take care of me. They took away my fear and made me feel safe. I trust them with my care. I had a rootcanal done. It was done through my crown, which had a rootcanal already. The old rootcanal was done over 30 years ago. Dr. Malueg had to remove the old filling and put in the new filling for the rootcanal. The shots were not painful at all, I did not even feel them. Lisa did x-rays several time to make sure the filling was right. It didn't take as long as I thought it would take. They answered all my questions. I'm so grateful that they saved my tooth. I would recommend them to my friends and family any time.
