Cracked Teeth

Cracked teeth demonstrate many types of symptoms, including pain when chewing, temperature sensitivities, or even the release of biting pressure. It is also common for tooth pain to come and go, making it difficult to diagnose the cause of discomfort.

Chewing can cause movement of the cracked pieces of your tooth, and the pulp within the tooth becomes irritated. At the same time, when biting pressure is released, the crack can close quickly, resulting in sharp pain. Eventually, the pulp will become damaged and tooth will consistently hurt, even when you are not chewing. It is possible that cracks can lead to infection of the pulp tissue, which can spread to the bone and gum surrounding the problematic tooth.

Types of Cracks

Craze lines

These are tiny cracks that only affect the outer enamel of the tooth. These cracks are more common in adults. These types of cracks are superficial and are usually of no concern.

Fractured Cusp

When a cusp becomes weakened, a fracture may result. The cusp may break off or be removed by a dentist. A fractured cusp rarely damages the pulp, so root canal is not necessary. Your dentist will usually restore the tooth with a full crown.

Treatable Cracked Tooth

This type of crack extends from the chewing surface of the tooth and vertically migrates towards the root. In some cases, the crack may extend below the gum line. It is possible for the crack to extend further into the root. Damage to the pulp is commonplace. In this case, root canal treatment is usually necessary. A cracked tooth that is not treated will worsen, resulting in the loss of the tooth. Therefore, early detection is essential.

Split Tooth

A split tooth is usually the result of an untreated cracked tooth. It can be identified by a crack with distinct segments. This type of tooth can never be saved intact. Yet, the position and extent of the problem will dictate whether any portion of the tooth can be saved. Sometimes, endodontic retreatment by the doctors and restoration by your dentist can be used to save a portion of the tooth.

Vertical Root Fracture

A vertical root fracture begins at the root and extends towards the chewing surface of the tooth. Unfortunately, they show minimal symptoms and may go unnoticed. Treatment involves endodontic surgery if a portion of the tooth can be saved by removal of the fractured root. Otherwise, the tooth will have to be extracted.

Today was the first time I have ever had a root canal and exploratory surgery done. I did not feel any pain as I was numbed very well. Dr. Baird and Ashley along with other staff made me feel so comfortable and answered all my questions. I was very apprehensive but the procedure went so smooth with no pain. Most people are like me and very afraid of dental procedures like a root canal, but go for it at Piedmont endodontics.

Everyone did a thorough job in evaluating my tooth and explained the procedure, follow up, and cost and were able to do the procedure then without having to come back and have it done.

I had delayed treatment for several years through the dread of having a root canal and then trying to eat differently with hopes of healing somehow. Neither was a good idea because I experienced immediate relief with this procedure. Don't misunderstand, it is still a root canal, but the great care by which I was treated far exceeded my expectations. Dr. Scheweizer and Madiscn (I hope I have her name correct:-)) along with their team at the High Point office did a fantastic job. I highly recommend Piedmont Endodontics for any need you may have. Thank you!

A root canal with no pain--compassion and understanding all round...now, a root canal is hardly to be described as a wonderful experience, but this one was as good as it could be...

Sometimes you only have one chance to make a first impression! Thank you, Front Office staff, for your professionalism, thoroughness and "PATIENCE" during my check-in/checkout process. It was very much appreciated. DR. MATTHEW BAIRD and ASHLEY (dental assistant) provided OUTSTANDING root canal treatment today! It was very evident, from start to finish, that DR. BAIRD and ASHLEY are the "Dream Team" because they definitely complemented each other! I really appreciated how they worked so closely together and kept me informed about what to expect during the entire root canal process. I highly recommend DR. BAIRD, ASHLEY and the entire Piedmont Endodontics team to anyone that needs endodontic treatment!

What I liked the best is I was expecting the worst. This is my first root canal. I learned that like many surgical procedures smaller is better. It was also painless. In fact, my tooth suffered so little trauma that I wasn't aware the novacane wore off. Good job.

Patient Review by jack Q

I had a severe Root Canal issue that flared up and my Primary Dentist referred me to Dr Stanley for a possible Root Canal. The staff at Piedmont Endodontics was incredible in how they handled the situation. I had an existing Root Canal. that was causing severe discomfort. I was headed on a long overseas trip in just 7 days. Delaying the procedure would be painful. After a discussion with Dr Stanley and looking at all options it was decided to move forward and replace the area with new material. Because it was an emergency Dr Stanley and his team worked thru their lunch period to insure my comfort. The procedure was a success, and my overseas trip went on as scheduled. My thanks to the entire staff for their professional handling of my case. Dr Stanley is a true professional, very knowledgeable, and a tremendous asset to Piedmont Endodontics.

The entire staff is great. Everyone is so friendly and makes you feel at ease. The doctor and her assistant, Faith, made sure I was comfortable throughout my entire visit. A root canal is no fun, but if you have to have one, this is the very place you want to be.
